The Center for Public and Nonprofit Management at the University of Central Florida


The Center for Public and Nonprofit Management is the research and community engagement arm of the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. The university is the second largest in the United States with enrollment of approximately 60,000 students. The school offers undergraduate to doctoral degrees in a range of fields, including public administration, nonprofit management, urban and regional planning, research administration, and homeland security and emergency management. The center focuses its research in four areas: democracy and civic engagement, diversity and inclusiveness, sustainability, and collaborative governance and enjoys more than ten years of providing capacity building and research services to government and nonprofit organizations in Florida and beyond.




The Center for Public and Nonprofit Management provides training and consultation on civic engagement and public participation in the following areas:

  • Design of public participation processes
  • Rationale for public participation
  • Leadership for public participation
  • Use of a variety of tools of public participation
  • Design and use of web-based and social media tools for public participation. Training and consultation can be offered remotely or live. Additionally, evaluation of existing public participation processes can be conducted.



Dr. Thomas Bryer is associate professor and director of the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management in the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. His research and teaching focuses on public participation and collaboration across government, nonprofit, private, and faith sectors. He is widely published in the top public administration journals, including Public Administration Review, Public Performance and Management Review, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, American Review of Public Administration, and others. Dr. Bryer has won multiple awards for his research, teaching, and service accomplishments and has traveled throughout the United States and around the world presenting on his work. He holds his PhD in public administration from the University of Southern California.
