About Us

Since 1979, the Alliance for Innovation has helped local governments think differently, act boldly, and lead through change.

As a nonprofit organization, the Alliance has spent more than four decades serving those at the forefront of local government with an enhanced capacity to anticipate, adapt and build better communities.

Innovation capacity is what enables local governments to remain resilient, adaptive, and forward-thinking.

Organizations that build this capacity can anticipate change, respond to emerging challenges, and deliver meaningful improvements for the communities they serve.  Strategic foresight helps equip leaders to explore what's ahead, make sense of uncertainty, and act with intention, not just react to change.

As the Alliance approaches its 50th anniversary, we are at a defining moment, one that calls not only for reflection, but for vision.

In 2026, we are launching a nationwide Listening Tour  to engage members, partners, and leaders across the profession.

These insights will help shape a renewed strategy and strengthen our role as a catalyst for innovation and transformation in local government.

Application to real life

The members of AFI are challenging the status quo and looking to drive local government forward. The network of people who opt into the Alliance for Innovation make the profession better and the service to our communities better.  My participation in AFI is like lightning in a bottle and it reminds me of the importance of connecting with my peers that do similar work.  I don’t have to figure out challenges on my own, but there's so much value in connecting with others to get their perspectives and look at our situation with fresh eyes. So that crowd sourcing collaboration is phenomenal, and I can't wait for the next opportunity to do it.
