Talkin' 'Bout My Generation...Here We Are Now, Entertain Us!

Join us on February 9th for the first Managers Forum of 2012.  This Webinar will air live at 9:00am PST; 10:00am MST/Arizona; 11am Central; Noon- EST.
We hear a lot these days about “preparing the next generation.” City and county managers in California even have a task force devoted to the issue.  Why is this an important topic? Humboldt County, CA County Administrator, Phil Smith-Hanes, will answer this question on February 9th.  Mr. Smith-Hanes considered himself a member of the “next generation” until he realized young people entering the workforce today didn’t share the same values and experiences he has.  Drawing on the work of historians William Strauss and Neil Howe, Mr. Smith-Hanes talks about how generations can relate in the workplace, why the “generation gap” may not matter quite as much as some people tend to think, and how generational cycles may actually point to a hopeful future.
Phillip Smith-Hanes was appointed County Administrative Officer for Humboldt County on December 19, 2009. He brought to the position more than 13 years of experience in local government, in both cities and counties in two states. Immediately prior to his appointment as CAO, Mr. Smith-Hanes served for two years as Humboldt County’s Assistant County Administrative Officer.  Mr. Smith-Hanes earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University, a law degree from Washburn University Law School and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas.

Cloud Computing for Local Government

February 16, 2012

Can local governments live in the clouds... the Internet Cloud that is?

Internet-based computing also known as Cloud Computing is the practice in which large groups of remote servers are networked so as to allow sharing of data-processing tasks, centralized data storage, and online access to computer services or resources. A great example of this is how Google hosts Google Mail and Google Docs.  The users files are stored remotely using technology run on Google’s hardware and software.  Even Facebook and YouTube could be considered cloud computing as large storage facilities for media sources and social interaction.

In government, cloud computing has emerged as an answer to major information technology challenges, such as infrastructure sprawl, strained budgets and a flat IT workforce. No longer does a local government need to have all of the internal resources both from a personnel and a hardware perspective to operate its technology.
According Governing magazine, “Unlike many technological advancements, cloud computing can provide a quick, dramatic return with limited investment.”  Cloud computing demonstrates the potential to reinvent the business of government as usual.  One example is the Federal governments Cloud First policy which requires federal agencies to default to cloud-based solutions whenever a secure, reliable, cost –effective option exists.
This webinar will focus on the viability of cloud computing for local governments.  We will look at what systems can be moved to the cloud, the decision process to move a system to the cloud, assessing the return on investment, picking the right platforms, the impacts on the workforce, what should remain inhouse, and what are the security risks.

If You Engage Them, They Will Come...Again and Again:  Building Sustained Community Engagement

Is your community undertaking a major comprehensive planning effort or visioning exercise?  Are you feeling overwhelmed about how to engage the community in that work?  In "If You Engage Them, They Will Come...Again and Again," Ian Hall and Gary Holmes of Winnipeg and Larry Schooler in Austin will take participants through an interactive session to prepare you to tackle those challenges.  You'll also hear first-hand experiences from the presenters, have a chance to discuss challenges and opportunities, and see community engagement techniques.

This session is ideally suited for local government professionals who specialize in urban planning, community engagement, city management, technology, facilitation, organizational development, public relations, and media relations.  It will help professionals from any aspect of local government understand the significance of working together with professionals from other departments and from outside their municipality to develop a multi-pronged approach to community engagement and comprehensive planning.  Finally, it will lay the groundwork for local government professionals to create a sustainable culture of community engagement.

Attendees will learn:

The importance of building consensus around a long-term community vision and how that informs next steps
The need to pick the right mix of community engagement tools and community champions to capture broad public input
How to sustain public enthusiasm and support for long-term community engagement
