Question

Contract Medical Examiner

Scott Sorrel asked

In Illinois, we have elected Coroner's that determine the cause of death and conduct death investigations. Rarely is the elected coroner a medical examiner. Such is the case in Peoria County, where our coroner contracts with a medical examiner to conduct autopsies. Our contracted medical examiner is ready to retire after several decades. There are only 650 MEs in the United States, according to our ME.

I'm not looking to necessary "steal" the ME from your community, but if anyone has an RFP for ME services or has gone through the process of replacing an ME, I would greatly appreciate some insight.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi, Scott. I gave our Coroner a call, to see if he had anything for you. He didn't have an RFP - we have to "sole source" this service, due to the extremely limited providers. However, he did give two references - to the National Association of Medical Examiners (http://www.thename.org/) and to the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (http://www.theiacme.com/). They might be able to help you find what you're looking for. I wish you well in your search.
