Question

Successful Environmental Education Programs

  0
Christine Edwards

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Utility Department is researching successful environmental education throughout the United States; specifically on Water Education targeted to k-12 students.

Has your city developed a new or innovative environmental education program that you would be willing to share information or email materials? If not, do you know of any communities that have new, innovative, or successful environmental education programs?
I would appreciate any information that you would have to share. The Utilty currently has contacts in the school system but is looking to develop a long term water education program to increase contact with the students of our community and to foster environmental stewardship with our natural resources.

Thank you very much for your assistance and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns

The City of Fort Collins Utilities (Colorado) has several successful water education programs, based on the principles of environmental education.

Hi Christine,

Here are a few examples of water education programs that may be helpful as you create your own water education program for your county.

-This is the City of Aurora, IL's water conservation education program http://icma.org/en/i..
-Water Conservation with a Personal Touch icma.org/Documents/Document/Document/301048
-Sonoma's Water Wise Garden Demonstrating with an educational component icma.org/Documents/Document/Document/303019

Christine, the City of Lake Forest in collaboration with science teachers at the local school has developed a program that has been presented to hundreds of students and has been well received.

A great resource is: http://gaprojectwet.org
The link to the WET site (Water Education for Teachers) has a good description the tools available on the "Georgia Educators" (http://gaprojectwet.org/gawet_teachers.asp) page. But it is worth exploring the whole site.
