In my transition I talked to many of you regarding coming from active duty to municipal government. Lowell Crow, Scott Larese (Titusville), Mark Freitag (Janesville WI, Nick Marano (Carson City, NV) and others. Most recently others have followed (Bob Geis, Chesapeake, VA) and Dan Schebler (Santa Rosa County, FL). I think it would be great to get a caucus together in Texas this fall and possibly a round table to discuss how municipal government can capitalize on the skill set our military brings to the table.

We've had a few veteran round-tables at past conference, though with scarce attendance. If there's interest we can convene a group. I've been wondering if a standing member committee or advisory board would have volunteers.

I would love to be involved in an advisory board or committee that worked with ICMA and members to clearly understand the strengths (and weaknesses) of attracting, mentoring and hiring veterans. My journey was not (and is not) always easy but I feel I am well suited for the City Manager job I was hired to do. Lowell Crow and I came from the same area and there are three of us in the municipal management from our area now. We have all been successful at the transition process with some help from great municipal mentors.

Rob, You could count on me.

Well, that sounds like a yes! I'l look into next steps. Typically committees meet on Sunday morning. I might look at an afternoon time to avoid conflicts with other committees (and my own conflicts).

None that I know of Nathan.
However, there are other more general scholarships out there.

Nathan Huff

are their any scholarships available for veterans in the ICMA?

Lowell Crow

When you are making the transition you need to focus on your leadership and management experience. If you have the MPA I find smaller community's will look to you and look at the leadership and management experience. Also attend the state and national conferences and start networking with the Headhunting firms and other city manager/city administrators.

There is a premier Institute for military veterans who want to get ahead in local government and leverage their leadership skills to the fullest. Attend the Midwest Leadership Institute this April and discover your leadership potential and thrive in an increasingly complex world with multiple personalities, competing self-interests, questionable ethics, and the prominence of the information age. Find out more about this leadership program here: http://bit.ly/ICMAMLI

The National Governor's Association has just released a report, "State and Territorial Support for Members of the Military, Veterans and Their Families" which is available at: http://bit.ly/1BOVv0d

A colleague and I have decided to start a non-profit aimed at guiding, encouraging, and assisting military veterans join the public service in North Carolina. Broadly, we are interested in helping veterans get into Federal, state, or local government, but we are focused primarily on local government. We are currently working on our constitution and by-laws. At this time, we are gauging interest in membership. We will have an elected 5 member board. Our membership will primarily be veterans, but we will also accept people who are motivated to assist veterans. We are on Facebook NCVIPS (www.facebook.com/ncvips), and Twitter, @ncvips. If you are interested, please contact me. I can be contacted through the ICMA website, ncvips@gmail.com, william.doerfer@gmail.com, twitter or facebook.
Thank you.

Hi William: I would be interested in helping with this process. I am the York County, S.C Manager, which is on the N.C. Boarder. In addition, I am retired USAF. Would love to talk about this.

Hello Mr. Doerfer and Mr. Shanahan, I am an active duty soldier and I will be retiring a year from now. I'm in a graduate program in Local Government Management and I'm actively looking for a position in city government in North or South Carolina. I would be very appreciative of any advice or guidance you may have. My email is anthony.s.miller12@gmail.com

In late summer, ICMA, NACo and NLC put together a four-part webinar series for ICMA members focusing on reintegrating veterans. Recordings of those sessions are now available for anyone to watch: http://bit.ly/1D8ww3B. Please spread the word.

Robert, has there ever been any discussion about a get together at ICMA national for Vets. I know there are many of us in Management positions.

Robert Carty

We've had a few roundtables in the past, but those have focused more on veterans in communities (employment, housing, integration, support) but not anything purely networking. I'm open to that if attendees are interested!

Interested!

This will be a very important project. Please let me know however I can be of assistance to you. We are currently hosting a series of webinars for state and local government officials on reintegrating veterans. There will be one today at 1pm on accessing care, and next Tuesday (August 12th) at 1pm will be on Employment (hurdles and pilot programs). Registration information can be found at icma.org/veterans. Think it would be great if you could join us. The webinars are free.
