In September, 2011, as a visitor from China, I took part in ICMA Climate Change Program here in America. I visited Annapolis, metropolis of Maryland State, Alexandria, an old city in Virginia, Chesapeake Bay, a firth on east coast of America and so on. After auditing the conference of MWCOG about solar energy and CHP, I met many people from ICMA, DDOE and EPA. They are warm-hearted and kind to us, and I’m really impressed by their serious attitude and abundant working experience. I feel so deeply in my heart. This morning we met with Jeannie, Amanda and Maia (They all worked for WMCOG), and talked about Climate Change Adaption. Last year they began a project of Smart Growth and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Metropolitan Washington region which was supported by EPA. As one element of this project, COG staff conducted preliminary vulnerability assessments to identify possible impacts of climate change to various sector---Building, Land use, Water and Transportation. Yesterday we went to Alexandria which was an old city with 300 years history, and met with some officers of Alexandria. We talked about eco-city which their city was planned to be. Alexandria is an independent city in the commonwealth of Virginia, which sizes 15.75 square miles and has a population of approximately 137,000 .Beginning in spring 2007,the city of Alexandria partnered with Virginia Tech school of Urban Affairs and Planning(UAP) to design and facilitate a new, strategic collaborative planning process, called Eco-city Alexandria. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Government (COG) is an organization of 21 local governments with over 250 members which is formed of 4 departments.( Department of environmental programs, Department of transportation planning, Department of public safety and healthy and Department of community planning and services) From last Thursday, we began to internship in COG. Last week we went Baltimore and visited a using floating wetland island which is made of recycled material and can be made to any size and shape.By using this simple system ,it can reduce nutrient and purify water.This island represents a new way in green technology.I want to know more about it and hope it can be used in my city someday.
