To change behavior, we need to create organizational cultures that encourage individuals to make ethical choices and then support them when they do. There are a number of tactics that can be used, but they need to be part of an overall strategy and not used as one offs. Set clear professional and organizational standards. Hold individuals accountable for their conduct with an objective review process. Talk about ethical issues to raise awareness. Engage in creative, fun, and formal training that not only builds awareness but gives individuals practical guidance about what

At least that is what a LaSalle University professor thought when he invited exotic dancers to his extra credit symposium on business ethics. Students reported that the guests kept their clothes on. The only lap dance was reserved for the professor. No news on the salient points of the lecture. The whole episode is under investigation because after all exotic dancers probably don't align well with the philosophy of a Catholic university. 2010 ICMA Annual Conference Blog
Hard to arrive in California and not be reminded of the outrageous stories coming out almost daily from the City of Bell. We all know that it's an outlier and not at all reflective of the profession. But as the Tennessee state association president reminded state leaders yesterday, it casts a pretty long shadow. Don't miss Monday's session at 2: 30 on What'$ a Manager Truly Worth? The LA times reporter who broke the story will be joining California members to talk about the story and the profession's reaction. Also, the ICMA Executive Board approved formal guidelines for establishing compensation.

Yes that would be Eliott Spitzer, former New York governor, who resigned from office after it was disclosed that he hired prostitutes, regularly. His new assignment is as a guest lecturer at Harvard University’s Center for Ethics. While redemption awaits us all (we hope) and this culture certainly forgives the fallen pretty quickly, the choice of Spitzer as a “Center for Ethics” guest speaker just eviscerates the heck out of the meaning of ethics and more importantly, ethical leadership. It’s an ironic and simply stunning choice. Not that much time has passed since it was disclosed that federal agents,
