Sweetwater Preserve - Alachua County

Indonesia Fellows in Alachua County : Ahmad Suhijriah, I Made and Muhammad Yunus.

We’ve visited the Alacua Sweetwater preserve in - Gianesville Florida. We were amazed when we see the arrangement of space and the utilization of these places by the public. The Sweetwater Preserve has two parts are West  and East Trail. The West Trail is rating easy. This series of loop trails meander 1,75 miles along sweetwater Branch and through upland mixed and floodplain forest. The area was pasture many years ago and the native species you see have naturally recruited into the area.

As for The East Trail is rating moderate. In a short 1,2 mile walk you will see 8 different natural communities including; sandhill, xeric hammock, sinkhole lake, baygall, seepage stream, upland mixed forest, mesic flatwoods and floodplain forest.

the 125 acre sweetwater preserve was bought in 2006 by Alachua County with funding from the Alachua county forever bond and florida communities trust grant. The preserved was purchased to protect, preserve and enhance the unique natural and cultural resources found on the property and to provide an enjoyable and aducational passive recreational experience.

Inovation by the local government and community support is key to realizing success of a healthy and clean environment that is comfortable for people.
