PM's Focus on Gun Violence

While the gun debate continues to smolder in the United States, the April issue of PM magazine focuses on the reality of gun violence and presents a relevant, perhaps inspirational, but definitely educational story on managing gun violence. “Gun Violence: It Can Happen Anywhere - Management Steps to Take Now,” is written by Ron Carlee, ICMA’s outgoing chief operating officer and as of April 1, Charlotte, North Carolina’s new city manager.

As editor, I haven’t dug into PM archives to check on my suspicion but I believe that an article on gun violence management is a first in the magazine’s 95-year history. But times call for managers to take note of the issues that their colleagues say need attention. Carlee interviewed managers who were on the job when mass shootings happened in their communities and condensed the information into 10 issues. An appropriate summary he makes is simple yet based on fact: “The challenge for managers is to be prepared.” Do you think this advice rings true?
