Balancing Act is an intuitive and informative online budget simulator for towns, cities, counties, school districts, special districts, and states that boosts public engagement efforts around the budget process. It not only increases fiscal transparency by publishing an entity’s budget in an easy-to-understand manner with graphics, clear descriptions, and contextual details of revenue and spending items, but it also goes a step further with its interactive, customizable, and built-in budget simulation where residents can attempt to balance the budget as they see fit, subject to the same constraints decision makers have. These budget priorities are then sent back to the public entity to be incorporated into its budget process. An additional module uses the same database to produce an estimated “taxpayer receipt” that shows residents where their taxes go.
