Chief appointed official position was recognized by ICMA in 1931 as a Council-Manager position.

The Director of Planning plans, coordinates, directs, and manages operations of the City’s Planning & Zoning Department including supervision of the research, analysis, and design of a comprehensive general plan for the physical development of the City; performs professional review of zoning and development applications; administers the Comprehensive Plan; prepares special reports and studies; enforces zoning and subdivision ordinances; and provides staff support to elected and appointed boards and commissions. The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with coursework in city or regional planning, public administration, architecture, geography, engineering, or related field. Must have a minimum of three (3) years of proven ability and experience in planning and three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. A Master’s degree and ACIP is preferred but not required.

The salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The City also provides pay for tenure up to $7,215 for ten years of service. City paid health and life insurance is provided; the City requires 7% TMRS contribution by employees with a 2-1 city match; and other voluntary benefit plans are available.
