Community Development Director – Beaufort County, SC
Beaufort County is seeking a well-qualified candidate for the position of Community Development Director. The successful candidate will initially serve as the Deputy Community Development Director, working alongside the current director, until May 2018 at which time the current Director will retire. Upon successful review, the candidate chosen for this position will be promoted into the Director position.
The Community Development Director manages the operations and personnel involving planning and development services for Beaufort County; supports the various Boards and Commissions appointed to review Community Development Applications. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: interpreting state and local laws pertaining to planning and development; developing and implementing the departmental budget; developing long-range and special plans for the County; drafting development regulations; reviewing and approving development plans and rezoning applications, communicating with the County Administrator and other County Officials as well as other agencies, boards, and the general public.
The ideal candidate for this position will have considerable knowledge of methods and principles of public administration and business management; demonstrated experience in leadership principles; the ability to engage internal and external parties to gain consensus and engagement; ability to assist elected officials, through the County Administrator, in formulating land use and growth management policy; and communication & interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, elected and appointed officials, the general public, etc. sufficient to project vision, set goals, exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Natural Resources or related field; 10 years community, urban or regional zoning or planning related experience. Master’s degree preferred. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification strongly preferred.
