Presented by Peter Kageyama and Michelle Royal.
The work of innovation is deeply tied to the myth of the lone genius, the person with the bright idea who changes the world for all of humanity. The lone genius mythology is perpetuated by a giant lone genius in the form of an entire region: Silicon Valley. Droves of business owners, city-makers, economists, technologists and entrepreneurs travel to this mecca studying and searching for the ingredients, the secret sauce they can replicate in their own community in the hopes of yielding similar results. And when they return, low and behold, they find they are playing the biggest, unwinnable amenities game to date.
When faced with these crippling comparison based facts, one day they may wake up and realize:Silicon Valley (or Austin, or Nashville, or Portland, etc) will not save their regional economy, nor should it. We must shift our belief that not only do we get to work with what we have, who we have and where we have it TODAY to both compete and THRIVE, but this stuff, our stuff, is enough to set us apart and attract whole new generations of citizens who we care for and care for us.
This workshop is for the people who make up the community that makes us. The co-creators, artists, makers, business owners, entrepreneurs, city makers, policy drivers, support services and institutions. Gather a group and represent your city to experience something remarkable, your community as an incubator of awesomeness!
