Reinventing Government: How the Entrepreneurial Spirit is Transforming the Public Sector by David Osborne and Ted Gaebler has been described as "an inspiring, well-organized exposition of ten principles that appear to offer hope for renewal in an era of government decline." This book served as an inspiration to many progressive local government managers who believed that governments need to be more "mission-driven,'' "competitive,” customer-driven,'' "anticipatory,'' and "results-oriented.'' But is also angered many professionals who saw it as an affront to traditional professional management and drew criticism from some public administration scholars. How did this book influence today’s government managers and impact management practices in local government? What did it mean to you? And which of its lessons do we need to carry into the future?
"WHAT IS REINVENTING GOVERNMENT?” VIDEO
This half-day program will feature an interview with Ted Gaebler discussing the impetus behind the book and insights about improving performance in the future as well as a critical review of the criticisms of the book. The afternoon session features assessments from leading managers of the impact of reinventing government principles and examination of the future of practice and research in the profession. The discussion will offer insights and tools to address the issues and challenges we face today. Re-read the book before you come to this thought-provoking workshop!
