We hear a lot these days about “preparing the next generation.” City and county managers in California even have a task force devoted to the issue. Why is this an important topic? Humboldt County, CA County Administrator, Phil Smith-Hanes, will answer this question on February 9th. Mr. Smith-Hanes considered himself a member of the “next generation” until he realized young people entering the workforce today didn’t share the same values and experiences he has. Drawing on the work of historians William Strauss and Neil Howe, Mr. Smith-Hanes talks about how generations can relate in the workplace, why the “generation gap” may not matter quite as much as some people tend to think, and how generational cycles may actually point to a hopeful future.
Phillip Smith-Hanes was appointed County Administrative Officer for Humboldt County on December 19, 2009. He brought to the position more than 13 years of experience in local government, in both cities and counties in two states. Immediately prior to his appointment as CAO, Mr. Smith-Hanes served for two years as Humboldt County’s Assistant County Administrative Officer. Mr. Smith-Hanes earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University, a law degree from Washburn University Law School and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas.
