IG Board Member Peggy Merriss has served as the City Manager for the City of Decatur, Georgia since May, 1993. Previously she served as the Assistant City Manager and Personnel Director for Decatur for a total of close to twenty-four years of local government experience. Peggy received her MPA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA in Politics from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She has also been recognized as an ICMA Credentialed Manager.

In 2003, Peggy was selected as the outstanding city appointed official in Georgia and was previously recognized as a "40 under 40" rising star by Georgia Trend magazine. She is a member of the Decatur Rotary Club and a graduate of the Atlanta Regional Commission Regional Leadership Institute and of Leadership DeKalb.

Her personal interests include travel, reading historical non-fiction and mysteries and playing low A level tennis.

Peggy has served in leadership positions on the local, state and national level including serving as President of the board of the International City-County Management Association (ICMA), having been the only woman and youngest person to ever serve in that capacity.

During her time on the ICMA Board one of her priorities was to establish partnerships that would support and foster the importance of professional local government management. "As I traveled throughout the country, I kept getting asked why IG and ICMA couldn’t figure out a way to support bolder, more cutting edge service delivery improvements," said Merriss.

"From there, discussions started about how to best create an organization that could be at the center of research and development, cutting edge technology and thought, and support the delivery of state of the art practices for local government management. The Alliance for Innovation partnership between Arizona State University, IG and ICMA is that organization. I am truly excited about the opportunities the Alliance will provide for local government," Merriss affirmed.
