Lemont, IL Police Department Offers First Combined Citizen’s Police Academy With Illinois State Police

Ever wondered what it would be like to be the person behind the badge? TV shows and movies about police officers are staples in the entertainment industry. But how accurate is the information they provide about law enforcement? Have you ever wanted to find and lift a fingerprint, give a DUI field sobriety test or test your reactions in a shoot/don’t shoot situation? (Safely, of course!)

The Lemont Police Department and Illinois State Police would like to welcome citizens who are interested in learning about the law enforcement profession to attend their first combined Citizen’s Police Academy. The Academy’s purpose is to assist citizens in gaining an accurate understanding of police practices, both state-wide and local. The Academy also presents an opportunity for citizens to voice their community concerns directly to police officers.

The Citizen’s Police Academy will offer 8 two-hour training sessions on Wednesday evenings. There will be optional field trips to other law enforcement areas of interest, such as Southwest Central Dispatch Center, Will County Coroner’s Office and the Bureau of Identification.

The class format will include practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises as permitted, as well as lecture. The faculty of the academy includes Lemont Police Department and Illinois State Police personnel. The class size will be limited and applicants will be subject to background screening and a check of references. There is no fee for this program.
