This year’s event will give about 40 local children the chance to shop at K-Mart alongside a North Las Vegas police or detention officer who has volunteered to be their “personal shopper.”

The Shop with a Cop event will begin outside the store as Santa Claus and his wife arrive in a parade of flashing police vehicles.  Santa and Mrs. Claus also will lend themselves to having their photos taken with the children.

This year’s participants include 25 children from Candelighters of Southern Nevada, an organization for children with cancer; 10 children from Basket of Hope, an organization for children with cancer or other serious illnesses; and five disadvantaged children from a local North Las Vegas family.

Funding for this holiday shopping spree has been provided through donations from North Las Vegas businesses and citizens.  About $15,000 has been raised so far, providing each child with at least $350 to spend.
