The Las Cruces International Airport received the “Airport of the Year” award at the 2010 New Mexico Aviation Conference held September 9th in Santa Fe, NM.
The airport received the award for achieving a significant accomplishment during the past year. Criteria include comprehensive long term capital planning, consistent and quality maintenance and upkeep of airport facilities, and community acceptance and support of the airport.
In presenting the award, NM Aviation Director Dave Ploeger said, “The Las Cruces Municipal Airport had a complete reconstruction of their primary instrument runway 12-30, as well as replacing the runway lights and signs. The almost $11 million project was funded under the American Reinvestment& Recovery Act (ARRA) and Airport Improvement Program (AIP) programs. The City of Las Cruces and the community of pilots all embraced the project as runway 12-30 intersects both runways 8-26 and 4-22 at the airport. The City worked with the contractor to ensure that the airport was able to remain operational as the almost year-long construction was completed, giving New Mexico its third concrete runway. Groundbreaking was in July 2009 with the final inspection in May 2010. The City kept the community informed by uploading the construction progress reports and pictures on the airport’s website.”
Las Cruces Int’l Airport Manager Lisa Murphy said she’s proud of what she and her team have accomplished at the airport. “We work very hard at Las Cruces Int’l to maintain a safe, reliable facility for all types of aviation uses. It’s gratifying to know that our efforts pay off in terms of safety and the recognition of our peers.”
The airport is located approximately eight miles from downtown Las Cruces. More information about the airport can be accessed online at www.las-cruces.org/facilities/airport/.
